Telecoms giant upgrading infrastructure

A Shropshire telecoms expert has welcomed a major national infrastructure investment by communications giant O2 and says improvements are also coming to the county this year.

Matt Sandford, managing director of Shrewsbury-based Pure Telecom, says that O2 have just announced that they will be managing one of the most technically advanced WiFi projects in the world.

“A new multi-million deal will see free WiFi delivered to business, residents and visitors in the City of London over the next 15 years,” said Matt.

The operator has joined forces with the City of London corporate, claiming the investment is one of the largest into wireless infrastructure ever seen in the capital.

The project will be made possible through small 4G mobile cells installed on lamp posts, street signs, buildings and CCTV columns and should ensure the City of London is best placed to become an early adopter of 5G.

Matt added: “It will be more technically advanced than similar projects used by global financial centres in New York and will be vital in maintaining the UK’s reputation as a digital leader.

“There is also a major upgrade coming to Shropshire this year, which will see 81% of the population having 4G coverage by the end of 2017 on O2 in the county.

“We welcome the investment in this innovative technology as it is good news for everyone. Connectivity enables us to communicate and trade more easily, attracting business and creating new jobs so it plays a pivotal role in supporting the future growth of the economy throughout the country.”
