Big names sign up for recruitment event

Some of the biggest names in the Shropshire construction industry will be at Telford College next month for a major staff recruitment event.

The ‘Careers In Construction’ session is being held at the Haybridge Road campus on February 7, in a bid to tackle a growing skills gap in the construction industry.

Confirmed exhibitors include two former Shropshire company of the year winners – McPhillips (Wellington) Limited and The Hawk Group – plus Keepmoat Homes, Lovell Partnerships, and Wrekin Housing Trust.

Other companies on the list include Women Into Construction, Total People, NCS/Job Box, APT Group, Telford & Wrekin Council, the University of Wolverhampton, and Pave Aways Limited.

Elements Europe, part of The Pickstock Group which has an annual turnover of around £200 million, has also agreed to offer each attendee a job interview, to help improve their technique.

The event, run in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council, Jobcentre Plus, the Department for Work & Pensions, and the Construction Industry Training Board, is from 1pm to 3pm on February 7 – and registration is now open.

Carol Smith, director of employer engagement at Telford College, said: “The event is designed to encourage a wide a range of people to consider a career in construction, including unemployed people and military veterans.

“Latest figures from the Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors shows labour shortages continuing to grow in the construction sector.

“An ageing population, coupled with a lack of new skilled workers, mean the industry is facing a ticking time bomb. This year, nearly 10,000 people are expected to leave the industry, compared with little more than 2,500 who will join.”

Louise Johnson, Shropshire employer lead for Jobcentre Plus said: “It is an amazing opportunity for our customers to have an insight in to all the different career choices in this buoyant sector.”

Trevor Oakley, CITB adviser for the Marches, said: “There are many ways you can get into construction, and the industry welcomes everyone from newcomers to people with some experience to career changers and military leavers.”

“We are delighted to help Telford College, new training courses and certifications in construction is something we are passionate about. The industry has a skills shortage so courses such as this are beneficial for all” said Michael Lloyd, HR director at Elements Europe.
