Garry Horrigan is the business development manager at Serchem Ltd in Hortonwood in Telford. He has been with the company for coming up to five years but has only been in the role of business development manager for eight months
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? It is my responsibility to identify, develop and secure new business opportunities across the decontamination, hygiene, sterile services and across the healthcare industry while driving growth and managing the team dynamics.
HOW IS YOUR JOB IMPACTED BY FLUCTUATIONS IN THE ECONOMY? I think all industries are impacted by this, especially ours. We have all heard of the pressures that our NHS is under but at Serchem we try to become part of the solution with our offering of cost efficient products that do not sacrifice quality.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF AI ON YOUR BUSINESS? I think it is amazing and it is going to bring so much innovation to health care and the boundaries are endless. Serchem will evolve with AI but stand true to our core beliefs that service comes first and people buy from people.
HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR COLLEAGUES WOULD DESCRIBE YOU? I would like to think they believe I am driven, ambitious, dependable, loyal and think of me as a friend not just a colleague.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR JOB? Encouraging our customer base to look at the bigger picture. We are far more than a chemical manufacturer, we operate as an ecosystem of technical support, expertise, and service that helps customers optimise their operations. However, many customers only fully recognise the value of the support when they trial alternative suppliers and experience the difference.
YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS? My two sons - they are my number one and representing my country at rugby.
PET HATES? People who think it is acceptable to be late and laziness. My grandfather always taught me, ten minutes early is on time, on time is late and late is disrespectful.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF SOME WISE ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t try to be something that you are not, just be yourself because that is always enough.
HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? Trying to drive the company forward means lots of time away from home so weekends are sacred and family time, spending time with Harriet and my boys Lenny and Vinny is the priority then.
FAVOURITE THING ABOUT SHROPSHIRE? Being a proud Welshman I obviously miss the Green Green Grass of Home but Shropshire is just as beautiful and only just over the border.
SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM OF CHOICE? I'm quite a private person, so don’t really do the social media thing so would have to say Linkedin.
FAVOURITE MOVIE AND/OR TV SHOW? Braveheart
EARLY BIRD, OR NIGHT OWL? Early bird - proud member of the 5am club.
DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE? My grandparents. And Gordon Ramsey, just so he could cook.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY WOULDN’T KNOW I spent time working as a bodyguard all over the world protecting high profile stars.
AND FINALLY . . . WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NEXT 12 MONTHS HAS IN STORE FOR YOU, PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY? Personally, I will continue to try to be the best father I can be, I truly believe that in life everyone has a WHY - my why are my family and my kids, everything I do is for them. Professionally, Serchem is a sleeping giant and the future is exciting, watch this space.
