Apprentice award for TCAT student

When Rachel Williams first started her apprenticeship at Telford College of Arts and Technology, she was described by staff as a ‘very fearful young lady’ with a lack of self-confidence.

Now, she is an award-winning apprentice who has blossomed, and is looking forward to a bright and successful career in the National Health Service.

Rachel, 25, from Hanwood, a former pupil of Thomas Adams school in Wem, works in the Therapies department at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, and began her apprenticeship through TCAT in the spring of 2015.

Her hard work and dedication has earned her TCAT’s 2016 Apprentice of the Year title.

“Rachel’s self-belief has developed immensely,” said the Trust’s pre-employment adviser Tracy Newbold.

“When she commenced her apprenticeship, she was a very fearful young lady who lacked complete confidence.

“She would be very apprehensive any time she was asked to do anything new, and the thought of working on reception and answering the telephone petrified her.

“However, her confidence has grown and now, Rachel talks to the patients, and has built up a good relationship with many of the regulars.

“She now runs the reception area, has developed an excellent telephone manner, and is confident when dealing with patients – who can sometimes be confrontational.

“It is quite an achievement for someone who was once very shy.”

Tracy added: “Rachel’s attitude to her work is excellent, and her self-belief has developed immensely.”

Hayley Corbett, Apprenticeship Recruitment Manager at TCAT, said: “We are all so proud of Rachel’s achievements – her story is a perfect example of how apprenticeships can transform people’s lives.”
