Josh on career road

Highway maintenance apprentice Josh Udall has been working on high-profile construction projects across the Midlands, thanks to an apprenticeship through Telford College.

Josh, 19, from Market Drayton, is working with Premier Surfacing Contractors of Childs Ercall as part of his level two highway maintenance apprenticeship and NVQ course.

He is one of three Telford College apprentices at the company, and has worked on host of big projects, including the A442 roundabout at Shawbirch in Telford, and laying of a new car park at Reaseheath College in Nantwich.

Josh, a former Grove School student, said: “I joined the army when I finished school - I went into the infantry for a couple of years, but it wasn’t for me. When I got back into Market Drayton, I applied for the apprenticeship and got it.

“From day one I haven’t looked back; I love working on the road with the team - they really look after you, and when you’re fully qualified and experienced, there is some good money to be made in road laying.

“My favourite job is driving the finisher, a roller that gives the road that final smooth surface. It is satisfying when you step back from your day’s work and think ‘I did that’.”

Andy Morgan, highway maintenance assessor at Telford College, said: “Josh is going the right way to becoming a very good highways worker, and is a valuable asset to the company he works for.

“All the team members we train are working on site gaining experience in their respective trades. One of our apprentices from last year is already managing a construction team.”

Josh has even worked on a project at his old school in Market Drayton. Kieran Barrett, site manager at the Grove School, said: “Josh is always very keen to learn new skills and get on the new equipment.

“He is always punctual and reliable; these are two important qualities for our apprentices. Josh is multi-skilled. He works independently on smaller jobs when needed including re-setting manhole covers. Josh has been taking on more responsibility recently.

“Telford College is a fantastic college. They have got some really well experienced assessors who themselves have had years ‘on the tools’ themselves.”

Shaun Dourish, director of Premier Surfacing Contractors, added: “When I met Josh he was enthusiastic, he was well presented and I think his years in the army had prepared him quite well for this role.

“Josh has been with us for about a year now and if he keeps going the way he is, he will learn some fantastic skills and he will be a good road layer.

“There are lots of careers in this type of civil engineering and together with Telford College, Josh will have a decent one himself. We are looking forward to working with Telford College in the future for more of our apprenticeships.”
