Staff at a Shropshire business have walked seven million steps in May to raise money for a charity which supported a member of their team with a life-saving stem cell transplant.
The team at Howden Shrewsbury completed the fundraising challenge for the Anthony Nolan Trust, with each member of the 28-strong team walking 83 miles during May - the equivalent distance from the High Street Shrewsbury branch to the Royal Infirmary Manchester.
Branch manager Ellie Cole said: “Our colleague Tom had to have a stem cell transplant at the Royal Infirmary, and The Anthony Nolan Trust has been there to find a much-needed donor and support him along the way.
“We wanted to do something meaningful to show our support, not just for Tom, but for everyone who might one day need the help of this incredible charity. Walking seven million steps together was our way of giving back, raising awareness, and hopefully encouraging more people to join the stem cell register. Every step we took was for Tom and for others like him.”
Anthony Nolan’s world-leading stem cell register, ground-breaking cell and gene therapy research and expertise in stem cell transplants means that they currently help four patients a day in need of a transplant, giving more people another chance to live.
For the Howden Shrewsbury team, their seven million steps challenge is not only a show of support for Tom, but a reflection of the wider Howden spirit - one that puts people first and uses collective power to drive positive change.
Giving back is an integral part of this mission, and what makes the challenge even more special is that it fell during Howden’s Global Giving Month. Every May, teams across the business are joining forces to make a difference in their communities - whether by fundraising, volunteering, or raising awareness for causes close to their hearts.
