Youth initiatives receive funding boost

Two programmes devised and delivered by The Fort Boxing Club for young people  in Whitchurch have received financial backing from The Grocott Family Foundation.

Launched earlier this year to students at Sir John Talbot’s School, a five-week Fit for Life programme, fully-funded through the partnership with the Foundation, has been designed to promote fitness, confidence and healthy lifestyle options through a structured series of boxing awards.

The final session for the school, a preliminary award assessment, was held at the club’s gym on Waymills Industrial Estate.

Sessions were delivered by club owner and head coach Daniel Bailey, a former England boxing coach and military boxing coach who will look to roll out further Fit for Life programmes in local schools.

Over four consecutive weeks in August, the club will be hosting a free-of-charge Summer Camp to offer fun and creative activities for children aged 7 – 12 during the summer holidays.  Boxing, dodgeball, indoor games, drawing and board games are all included in the programme.

Daniel said, “Following my experience working in elite boxing coaching and seeing first-hand how sport literally changes lives and promotes purpose and good health, I wanted to transfer this into providing support for grassroots boxing.

“I have been fortunate to set up my own club in Whitchurch and one of my key objectives is to support our local community by introducing the joy of sport to young people.

“Thanks to the support I’ve received from the team at The Grocott Family Foundation who are totally aligned with my thinking, I’ve been able to deliver two fantastic, free-of-charge programmes to young people.”

Linda Grocott of the Foundation said, “The work that Daniel is initiating is admirable. The fun, wellness, opportunities and connections that sport delivers is second to none and we are very happy to support these superb programmes.

“I am sure the Summer Camp will be very popular and will provide much-needed support for parents looking to keep their children busy during the holidays.  We urge people to book their places as soon as they can to avoid missing out.”

Anyone wishing to book their children into the Summer Camp should message Daniel Bailey on 07523 743589.  Sessions will be held from 9am to 12pm, Tuesday to Thursday, commencing Tuesday August 4, Tuesday August 11, Tuesday August 18 and Tuesday August 25.
