A Telford businessman is aiming to raise hundreds of pounds for breast cancer research by taking part in The Prudential RideLondon cycling event.
Anton Gunter, managing director of Global Freight Services Ltd, will undertake the 100 mile cycle challenge on August 4, that will involve him cycling around London and surrounding areas on a closed road circuit.
By taking part in the event, which is now in its seventh year, Anton will be raising money for the UK’s leading breast cancer research charity Breast Cancer Now.
“When I was 11, I recall sitting down with my two sisters and being told by my mum that she had breast cancer. My world fell apart thinking the worst could happen but after a double mastectomy and a pretty painful recovery mum went on to beat the cancer and now, 35 years on, she continues to lead a full and happy life.
“My mum is one of the fortunate ones but I know others have not been so lucky and this is why I will be getting on my bike this August to raise money to support further research into the disease. It’s the charity’s ambition that by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live but of course this relies on funding for impactful research.”
Anton, who has completed several other charity challenges in the past including the London Marathon, has now started training for the mammoth bike ride.
“I’ve dusted off my bike and I’m already putting in a few miles here and there so I’ll hopefully be up to speed by the time August rolls around. It should be good fun and will certainly be a challenge.”
If Anton completes the bike ride successfully, he will be two thirds of the way towards qualifying for a London Classics medal – an award given to those who successfully complete the London Marathon, The Prudential RideLondon and The Swim Serpentine. It’s hoped he will complete the final stage of the challenge next year when he undertakes the two-mile swim at Serpentine Lido in London’s Hyde Park.
