Care group staff now dementia friends

The first group of staff members from Quil Care Group in Shrewsbury have taken part in a Dementia Friends session at their head office in Hadnall.

The one-hour free Information Session was delivered by Dementia Friends Champion Viv Edgar who lives in Wem.

The group, which has also applied to become part of the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Dementia Action Alliance, is showing support for people with dementia by becoming a dementia friendly organisation.

Run by the Alzheimer's Society, the Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people's perceptions of dementia.

Statistics from the society report that there are approximately 850,000 people living with the condition in the UK, with numbers forecast to rise to two million by 2051.

Viv decided to be a Dementia Friends Champion in 2016 when she moved to Shropshire and received training from the Alzheimer's Society.

She said: “I used to be a development manager with West Sussex Adult Services and supported carers of people living with dementia. So, l am really excited to have the opportunity to help create dementia friendly organisations and communities across the Shrewsbury area and to know how much that support means to people living with dementia and their families.”

Jacqui Houlston, the new manager for Quil Care Group added: “According to locally provided Public Health data, it is estimated that in 15 years there will be 96,500 people over the age of 65 living in Shropshire.

"If current prevalence estimates on dementia are applied to this figure, by 2032 there will be around 5,900 people over 65 and about 410 people below this age living with the condition in the county.

“Given the age of our population, it is likely that dementia will impact upon Shropshire more so than almost any other part of the country.

“Our company ethos is to support anybody living with dementia, including family carers. That is why we wanted Viv to come and deliver these very important training sessions to ensure that all our supporting care staff, as well as management, will meet the challenge and have a good understanding and knowledge of dementia which will be instrumental in our day to day care and activities.

“We also plan to implement this learning with new staff, by including a dementia awareness session in their induction training and to work with our local health and social care partners

to help our clients and their families access the extra care support that is appropriate to enable people to live well with dementia.”
