Search is on for college governors

Telford College is looking to recruit new independent governors to broaden the skills base on its corporation board.

The college says it is particularly seeking an experienced business person with financial expertise, and another with a background in teaching, learning and assessment in the fields of further or higher education.

Chair of governors Paul Hinkins said: “We are looking for individuals who are able to provide the support and challenge needed to further raise improvement across all aspects of the college.

“The progress made by Telford College since the merger of TCAT and New College Telford has been recognised by Ofsted. We are proud to be producing positive results; we are an ambitious college, strongly focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for learners, and meeting the current and future needs of our local businesses.

“This is an exciting time for further education and with the new waves of investment currently coming into our region, it is vital we work together to help create a workforce with strong academic, vocational and employability skills.”

Governors help to shape the college’s strategic plan, and are expected to attend around 10 scheduled corporation meetings a year, serve on a committee or working group, and attend several training events and on-site visits.

The deadline for applications is February 28, with interviews scheduled to take place during the weeks beginning March 11 and 18.

Applicants must send a covering letter, CV and the completed application form to Stephanie Morley, Clerk to the Corporation, either by post to Telford College, Haybridge Campus, Telford, TF1 2NP, or by emailing stephanie.morley@telfordcollege.ac.uk.

The application pack can be downloaded from www.telfordcollege.ac.uk/governance

More details about the voluntary governor posts are available by calling Stephanie Morley on 01952 642294.

Successful candidates will be supported through an induction process and will have the opportunity to be shadowed by an experienced governor, with a combination of online and face-to-face training.

Telford College principal Graham Guest added: “We’re looking for governors who want to be part of making a positive difference to local people’s lives. Continuous improvement remains a key focus for everyone at the college. We are proud of our achievements to date, but there is still more to do - and the governing body plays a pivotal role.”
